What Is Harry Potter: Defenders of Hogwarts?

Defenders of Hogwarts is a competitive board game about preparing Hogwarts Castle for an approaching attack. You may play as Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw or Slytherin, or take the opposing Dark Arts role. The two sides use different cards and win in different ways. House players can coordinate, but the player who individually collects two Defence Shields wins for their house.

The action unfolds on a map of Hogwarts and its grounds. Players move pawns, use card effects, collect items and work toward location-based objectives. A separate side board tracks Hogwarts loyalty and the advancing Dark Arts threat. As that threat progresses, more Dark Arts abilities unlock and the stakes rise.

Despite the search phrase “Harry Potter Defenders RPG Game,” this is an asymmetric tabletop strategy game, not a conventional video RPG. The published product uses a physical map, cards, pawns and player boards—not a downloadable digital campaign.

What's Included in the Board Game?

The box includes a main Hogwarts map, a side board for tracks and shared cards, four House player boards, one Dark Arts player board, House and Dark Arts pawns, multiple card decks, tokens and Defence Shields. Key items include Library Books, Parchment Scrolls, a Dark Detector and Dumbledore's Army Coins.

Cards affect movement, grant abilities or improve future turns. House Location Cards create objectives based on positions on the map. Defence Shields have an especially important role: collecting two of them is the House victory condition. When setting up, arrange the shared board and cards before distributing the player-specific pieces.

How to Play Defenders of Hogwarts

1. Choose roles and set up the table

One person plays Dark Arts; everyone else selects a different Hogwarts house. In a four-player game, that means three House players and one Dark Arts player. Each House player starts with three pawns in the Great Hall and one on the Hogwarts Loyalty Track. Four Dark Arts pawns start deployed, with extra pawns in reserve for larger groups. Use the Setup Assistant below to calculate the counts.

Prepare the boards, cards, tracks and tokens as shown in the official rulebook. House players receive three Location Cards. Everyone draws five cards from a seven-card starter deck. The House player to the left of Dark Arts goes first, then turns continue clockwise.

2. House turns: Explore, Learn or Replenish

Choose one main action each turn. Explore plays a card for movement and applicable effects. Learn adds a new card to your deck by discarding one card for standard choices or two for an advanced card that also improves your loyalty position; you need an eligible pawn outside a Protected Area. Replenish lets you discard and draw until you have five cards, and stand up stunned pawns.

The crucial trade-off is that every House Replenish action advances the Dark Arts marker. You may gain a better hand but push the opposing side closer to stronger effects. Eligible free actions, such as using certain Hogwarts Tokens or claiming a Parchment Scroll, may also be taken alongside your main action.

3. Dark Arts turns: pressure the defenders

Dark Arts players choose between Explore and Replenish. Explore uses a card to move and trigger an available effect. Orange and red effects unlock later as the Dark Arts Path advances. Replenish recovers stunned pawns and draws toward five cards, but unlike House players, Dark Arts players cannot freely discard cards as part of that action.

A Dark Arts pawn that ends movement on a House pawn's space bumps one defender back to the Great Hall, then returns to the Dark Arts pool off the main board. The Dark Arts player gains that House Marker. Collecting all active House Markers advances the Dark Arts Path; the markers are then returned. After bumping, draw two Dark Arts Acquire cards, keep one on top of the Draw Deck and return the other to the bottom of the Acquire Deck. Resolve this card acquisition once per turn, even after multiple bumps.

4. Use positioning, routes and protected spaces

Movement comes from cards rather than dice. Choose the pawn and route that best support your immediate goal. Some effects enable Secret Passageways; certain spaces offer items or bonuses. Dark Arts pawns cannot enter Protected Area spaces, so those locations matter when defenders need safety. For walls, card timing or unusual movement cases, consult the map legend and official rules instead of guessing.

How Do You Win?

Hogwarts House victory: collect two Defence Shields

A House player wins by collecting two Defence Shields. To claim one, reach a Defence Shield space with a Library Book Card, a Parchment Scroll and the exact third item pictured on the shield: either the Dark Detector or a Dumbledore's Army Coin. Exchange those items for the shield. Holding good cards is not enough; the matching items and board position are essential.

For a Parchment Scroll, you need pawns occupying two of the three locations on your House Location Cards at the same time. Progress on the Hogwarts Loyalty Track also matters: it can unlock the Dark Detector and reveal the Room of Requirement, where D.A. Coins become available. A useful planning approach is to choose an accessible shield and work backward to the items and positions required.

Dark Arts victory: complete the path and reach a location

The Dark Arts player must collect all three Dark Arts Progress Tokens and bring a required number of pawns to the location specified by the Dark Arts Location Card. That number can be three, two or one, depending on how far the Dark Arts Path has progressed when the objective is taken. The path also advances when a House player Replenishes, so repeated hand-refreshing helps the opposing side.

Reaching the end of the path does not automatically award victory. When the final space is reached, all players draw up to five cards and can no longer Replenish. Card effects and draw spaces can still provide cards. If everyone runs out of cards without meeting a win condition, the game ends in a draw. Use the official rulebook for exact endgame timing.

Five Useful Tips for Your First Game

Know your goal before moving. House players need two shields; Dark Arts needs progress tokens plus a location objective. Decide what your next action is meant to achieve.

Replenish deliberately. A better hand is useful, but House Replenish actions advance the Dark Arts Path. Check for worthwhile card plays and legal free actions first.

Remember that House victory is individual. You can coordinate with other Houses, but the player who collects two shields wins. Plan your own route to the required items.

Value position, not just cards. Reaching the right room may be more important than drawing another card. Think about scroll locations, shield spaces and the possibility of getting bumped.

Keep the rulebook nearby. Tracks, item conditions and special movement take practice. These tips are strategic suggestions, not new rules; defer to the publisher when a card or collision has precise wording.

Release Date, Editions and Where to Buy

MinaLima's Kickstarter campaign for Defenders of Hogwarts ran from June 30 to July 23, 2026, and that crowdfunding period has ended. The publisher's FAQ listed October 2026 as the planned shipping window for the base game, with the Collector's Box and certain add-ons expected in a later shipment around March 2027. Those are plans, not a guarantee that a particular order has shipped or that a copy is in stock near you.

The FAQ also says the base game was planned for selected House of MinaLima retail locations in autumn 2026, with broader wholesale availability aimed at 2027. The publisher's recommended UK retail price for the base game is £75 including UK VAT; regional prices, shipping, taxes and availability may differ. Kickstarter editions can include extras that are not part of the ordinary retail box. For confirmed ordering details, visit the official campaign and current publisher information rather than trusting an outdated third-party stock badge.

The initial Kickstarter version is in English. MinaLima has said other language versions are planned, but has not provided a confirmed date for each language in its published FAQ. If you are deciding whether to buy, check the language of the specific edition, the difference between base and collector rewards, and the seller's shipping terms first.

This guide does not host online play. The official materials checked for this page describe a physical product, and we have not verified an official playable browser edition.

How many players does it support?

Two to five. One person is always Dark Arts; the other one to four people each control a different Hogwarts house. The Setup Assistant calculates the correct pawn totals.

Is this the same as Hogwarts Legacy?
